Remember:
Read aloud to your child!
Read to and with your child often - it's a great way to share a good book with your child... yes, even with older children!
Has your child chosen a book that's a bit beyond their reading level?
Read the book to/with your child, discuss the characters, the plot and share a wonderful reading experience.
Be a model for your children
Letting your child see YOU reading frequently makes it more likely he/she will become a lifelong reader too!
Don't forget the value of a good picture book - again YES, even for older children!
Picture books are a valuable vehicle for learning and sharing with your child. With an older child explore nonfiction & biography picture books in greater detail, paying attention to the language, and discovering new information together. Why? Read below:
“Why do picture books matter? Of course part of the reason is because they’re books, but the heart of the matter is right there in the name, it’s the pictures. Before they read words, children are reading pictures. In picture books, the illustrations work in concert with the text in a way that is unique among art forms.
Picture books tell stories in a visual language that is rich and multi-leveled, sophisticated in its workings despite its often deceptively simple appearance. It is through the book’s images that a child first understands the world of the story – where it is set, when it takes place, whether it’s familiar or new. They read the characters’ emotions and interactions in facial expressions and body language. They may notice secondary pictorial story lines happening alongside the main action, like a secret for them to follow.”
“Such visual reading is as important to a child’s development as reading written language is. Take away the pictures and you deprive kids of a wealth of understanding – not to mention a lot of fun.”
